Round up #1 - Stuck in the 1940's

Welcome to the first Retro Round up. Old arcade games are something of a fascination of mine since being a small child.
Many of my fondest memories come from hours spent in some arcade or another. Arcade games offered better graphics and an overall better experience than my humble Atari or commodore C64 could muster. Everyone wanted an arcade copy of Space Harrier not a Sinclair spectrum port!
Nowerdays we can emulate the original MAME ROM sets on our handheld devices. Enter Mame4droid and a few hundred roms and the arcade is in your hands.
This section features quick fire game ROM reviews. Nothing fancy. Just straight to the point!

A strange prequel to the Series. Featuring smooth graphics and intense gameplay

Title: 1942
Developer: Capcom
Year: 1984
ROM Stability: Good working order
ROM Name: 1942

The first game in the 194X Series and a true classic. Pit your wits against the might of the Japanese air force during WWII. This classic shoot-em-up was a template for many games that followed. This games is over thirty years old now and it still plays really nice. Great!

Title: 1943
Developer: Capcom
Year: 1987
ROM stability: Good working order
ROM Name: 1943

The second in the series 1943 featured a progression in graphics from 1942, featuring a new style font and graphic style. Commando and other games used the same type font.
Graphics as well as gameplay were improved with this release.

Title: 1944 - The loop master
Developer: Capcom
Year: 2000
ROM stability: Good working order
ROM Name: 1944

The final in the series featured more improvements in gameplay and graphics. Cut scenes were at this time becoming popular in games and 1944 had included a few noteable ones in its introduction screen. A great ending episode to a genre defining Series.

If truth be told, I was never really a die hard fan of this series. It was the kind of game which bored me to death after around ten minutes. Nowerdays I can manage a while longer before O get fed up and change the ROM! Weather a fan or not, this series defined the shoot-em-up generation and should be respected for that.
